Dick's Hideaway
A special February moment
Dick MacKenzie
Settled at camp before sundown. First time here for a few weeks. Home sweet home.
Path to the front door is narrow for now, but it gets us here.
Cabin is warm and cozy, but will take 24 hours to fully heat up. Who cares, though? We have quilts and blankets.
This morning's hour leading to sunrise dawned a creamsicle world, an ever changing overhead of pastel yellow, orange, and cream, smudged and subtly streaked with faint gray. I wanted to step outside and lick the sky, and bite off a tiny soft chunk at the edge like a boy with ice cream on a stick.
It was our first morning at camp in 2019. Hard to believe we left for a New Year's Eve party in town and, for one reason and another, we just never got back until yesterday.
The joy of being here is exquisite. Beauty surrounds and the birds are back. I hold a dreamsicle firmly in hand.
