Patience in April

Spring arrives slowly. No matter the speed, it always seems slow.
Grace and I watched Trumpeter Swans, four of them this morning, floating on an open stretch of river. They were sharing the little piece of paradise with a handful of Canada Geese, Mallards, and Hooded Mergansers.
Last week none of them were here.
We found fresh pieces of fish on the ground beneath a huge spruce tree near the river bank. They were probably dropped by a Bald Eagle that grabbed the big Pike as it finned in preparation for the upcoming spawning session in the weeds and took it to the treetop for dinner.
No bear sightings yet, but a rogue bruin early out of hibernation could wander through any time now. Most won't be out and active for another two or three weeks.
Lake ice is still thick and hasn't started melting at the shore. Snow is forecast tonight. Temperatures during the next few days will be minus 10 or 12 overnight, and just above or slightly below freezing in the day.
