Dick's Hideaway
The famous sweet pickerel
A lot of years ago two cooks, influenced by the giggly juice, on a boys' fishing weekend, sliced up an apple, battered the chunks, and deep fried them, along with the evening's walleye dinner, and served them as a joke.
That silliness came to be a much loved tradition, known as sweet pickerel. It's a real treat.
The weekend walleye opener featured the beautiful battered, deep fried apple mixed with our favorite fish. The meal was exquisite.
We added battered, deep fried bananas this year. Not my favorite, but it was good, and Mary raved about it.
Pan fried walleye has to be the standard for excellence, but deep fried must be a close second. I wonder if a dipping sauce would enhance the excellence?
