Special to The Bulletin
On Monday, May 17, 2021 at approximately 6:40pm the Chief and Council of Sachigo Lake First Nation and a local Sachigo Lake First Nation Band Constable, acting on a tip from a community member, conducted a search on a Band home. As a result of this search, Chief and Council confiscated drugs, drug paraphernalia, and cash exceeding $141,000.00. It is believed this cash was from the proceeds of illegal drugs.
NAPS (Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service) was notified of the search in advance, and officers confirmed the inability to participate. NAPS officers observed from a distance as Chief and Council and the local Band Constable conducted the search.
The Chief and Council conducted the search authorized by its inherent authority to govern the community. A Sachigo Lake First Nation By-Law also protects the community from unlawful drugs and alcohol.
As a result of the search, one community member has been evicted from the Sachigo Lake First Nation by way of Band Council Resolution (BCR).
“Sachigo Lake First Nation will not tolerate illicit drug activity in the community” stated Chief Robert Beardy. “The leadership will, without hesitation, remove anyone participating in the making or selling of narcotics”.
