Fees increasing at Hidden Lake Landfill

Fees for waste disposal at the Hidden Lake Landfill will be increasing for Sioux Lookout residents.
“The landfill fee increase is based on the annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) as reported in June each year by Statistics Canada,” explained Jeff Hawley, Manager of Public Works and Infrastructure in a Sept. 12 media release. “The landfill does not receive any funding from your tax dollars, it is a user pay system. This means the landfill fees charged must generate all of the money it needs to operate in a year.”
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout stated that, “Matching the annual CPI is necessary to ensure that the landfill has adequate funds to pay for increased fuel costs and other operating expenses. The CPI for 2022 is 8.1%. This increase will apply to all materials charged for at the landfill. As an example, the current minimum charge is $7.80 for a 50 kg load. Effective September 27, 2022, the minimum charge will increase to $8.43.”
The rate increase does NOT apply to bag tags for curbside garbage pickup. Bag tags are currently $2.60 each.
