Get ready for curling season at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club
Tim Brody - Editor
Curling season is right around the corner and the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club (SLGCC) will begin accepting registrations for 2023 curling league play on Oct. 23 at the clubhouse.
JoAnne Van Horne, SLGCC Curling Committee member, shared that the club is trying something new this year with Trophy league play on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Instead of Men’s and Women’s leagues, teams will now play any teams that have signed up the evening they wish to curl.
Mixed Trophy play will take place on Friday.
This year’s league schedule will also include: Open Double and Stick curling on Monday, daytime drop-in from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, and a drop-in Rec Night for individuals or teams of any skill level on Thursdays.
Trophy league play will be for competitive men’s and women’s teams, or mixed teams in the case of Friday nights.
Open, drop-in, and recreational curling will be less competitive.
Curling season kicks off with learn to curl sessions Tuesday, Oct. 24 from 7 – 8 p.m., Thursday Oct. 26 from 7 – 8 p.m. and Wednesday Nov. 1 from 7 - 8 p.m.
The free learn to curl sessions will teach participants the basic rules of the sport along with curling etiquette. Participants will have the chance to play a beginner level game.
The club is advising participants to dress in warm, comfortable clothes, and clean shoes. Curling brooms and sliders will be provided.
Van Horne said the learn to curl sessions are a great way to learn the game or brush up if you haven’t played in a while.
The learn to curl sessions are for 12 years-of-age and up. League play is for participants 16 and over.
SLGCC is also looking at offering a family league after Christmas.
