Homicide investigation underway in Kasabonika Lake First Nation

A 21-year-old Kasabonika Lake First Nation man has been charged with second degree murder, following an incident that occurred in that community on March 20.

Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) officers responded to a report that a six-year-old girl had been seriously assaulted at a residence in the community.

Police report the child was transported to the medical centre in the community by family and community members. 

“As the officers responded, the young victim was pronounced dead at the medical centre,” a news release issued by police informs.

A post mortem examination was scheduled to take place on March 22 at the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) in Toronto.

Lanny Edward Mekanak was arrested and charged with second degree murder.

“Officers from NAPS and OPP North West Region Crime Units are continuing the investigation under the direction of Detective Inspector Randy Heida of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch,” a news release issued by police states.
