Honouring local women
Sioux Lookout’s Violence Action and Awareness Committee (VAAC) partnered with Sioux North High School on March 1 to host a Women’s Talent Showcase at the school that evening in honour of International Women’s Day, which is observed on March 8.
VAAC Committee representative Geneva Sainnawap, Ah-Shawah-bin Victim Support Services Executive Director, said the free event was open to everyone and included complimentary appetizers as well as self-care demonstrations, artwork, and a talent show celebrating the local community and women, which included performances by the Sunset Women’s Aboriginal Circle Women’s Drum Group (first photo).
“This is an open space not just for women, but for everybody… but the target is to showcase the women in our community and what they can do,” Sainnawap shared.
The event was held a week early due to the March Break next week to accommodate students in the high school’s culinary, drama, and aesthetic classes who helped out with the event.
