Hudson remembers
Hudson and area residents gathered at the cenotaph for Remembrance Day services on Nov. 11.
The service, organized by members of Candlish Memorial, Branch #139, Royal Canadian Legion in Hudson, was led by Legion President Bob Starratt and included a parade led by the colour guard, the singing of O Canada and God Save the King, the playing of the Last Post, two minutes of silence followed by Reveille, and the laying of wreaths.
For the first time in over 40 years, Reg Drew, Medal of Military Merit (MMM), Canadian Forces Decoration (CD), was unable to attend the service. Starratt said Drew has always done a tremendous job as Master of Ceremonies for Remembrance Day services in Hudson, adding his absence was keenly felt.
Starratt said the service went very well, with an estimated 60 people attending.
Starratt thanked Wayne Reichert for sanding the walkway to the cenotaph and around it, as well as everyone who contributed to the service and the luncheon which followed the service at the Hudson Hall.
Starratt noted, “Last year, Ellyn Bernier asked that we honour her father (Barney Pinkess), who was in the First World War, with a wreath, and I thought, ‘that’s a good idea.’ So we did that and it went well, and I thought, ‘we’re going to do something this year as well’. This year I honoured one of the fallen air force pilots, whose name is on the cenotaph (Roland Mellish).”
Starratt added that one of the cairns on Lac Seul is also named after Mellish.
