A possible case of measles in the Sioux Lookout area has turned out to not to be.
On May 30 the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) advised that it was investigating, “a probable case” of measles in an infant in the Sioux Lookout area.
NWHU explained at the time, “A probable case is someone with signs and symptoms of measles, with travel to an area of known measles spread.”
NWHU advised the public of possible measles exposure at locations in the community between May 27 and May 29.
On May 31, NWHU advised that, “laboratory test results have confirmed that this was NOT measles,” advising anyone who had been isolating or monitoring after potential exposure to discontinue these measures.
“Measles is highly contagious and airborne, requiring prompt action on probable cases to prevent its spread and protect those who cannot be immunized,” shared Sandra Krikke, manager of Infectious Diseases at NWHU. “There is currently no known risk of measles in the community. We appreciate everyone’s quick responses and diligence during this situation.”
