Obishikokaang (Lac Seul First Nation) will host one of four Emergency Accessibility vehicles aimed at providing the First Nation citizens of Treaty #3 with accessible transportation options.
Grand Council Treaty #3 announced in a Jan. 31 media release, “Numerous environmental and health emergencies have highlighted a shortage of accessible transportation for vulnerable populations in community during evacuations, or in accessing urgent care. In response, Grand Council Treaty #3’s Health Transformation, and Territorial Planning Unit, introduced resolution #CA-22-27 to address accessibility gaps and barriers that vulnerable community members experienced.”
Grant Council Treaty #3 further informed, “The Health Emergency Vehicles will be available in each of the Four Directions, as per the 4-directional governance model, and will support First Nations and regional partners to provide sustainable, safe, and consistent transportation. Each vehicle is equipped to be wheelchair accessible with the goal of eliminating transportation challenges experienced by members with mobility impairments.”
With guidance from the Social Chief’s Committee, Grand Council Treaty #3 identified the top three priorities for the Emergency Accessibility Vehicle Program:
- In-community Health, Social, and Natural Emergencies and Declaration of Emergency;
- Transportation for Mental Health and Addictions Treatment and Healing;
- Transportation to Cultural Events outside the community with the intent of improving Mental Health.
