A Controlled Entrances pilot program for six LCBOs in northwestern Ontario announced by the LCBO on Feb. 12 “intended to combat theft and create a safer experience for employees and customers” was canceled just days later on Feb. 14.
The cancelled pilot program included LCBO locations in Sioux Lookout, Kenora, and Thunder Bay.
Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy issued the following statement on Feb. 14 “Over the past 24 hours, I have heard serious concerns about the LCBO’s newly announced pilot program. I’ve directed the LCBO to cancel it immediately. Where there are safety concerns, LCBO will continue to work with its community partners to explore alternatives to ensure the safety of its customers and employees.”
The LCBO shared on Feb. 14, “Earlier this week, we shared that in spring 2024 LCBO planned to launch a controlled entrance pilot in six stores in northern Ontario.
“Following direction from the Ontario Government, LCBO is not moving forward with our controlled entrances pilot.
“We remain committed to working collaboratively on additional measures to reduce shop theft and violent incidents in our stores and ensure safe experiences for our customers and employees.”
