A local resident is feeling a little bit luckier after taking home the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC) Foundation’s March jackpot, worth $10,855.
As 50/50 charity draw winner Cindy Phillips explained, buying lottery tickets is not something she’s in the habit of doing.
“I normally don’t buy tickets, but this draw caught my eye because the money goes to the hospital. The hospital is near and dear to my heart. It’s been good to us. I’ve lost my brother and my father, both to cancer, and the hospital was so good to us though their illness, and their passing. Today we still support the hospital in many ways. My mother, Hazel Mills, still makes quilts for all the chemo patients in the chemo unit. We’ve always been very grateful for all the love and support Meno Ya Win has given us.”
Phillips continued, “It’s an honour to win this. My husband Bob and I are celebrating our 40th Anniversary this year, and we’ve been wanting to go on a trip to the mountains. We were having a bit of a fit watching the gas prices rise, but now we’ll treat ourselves and hopefully in August we’ll be sitting in the mountains drinking wine!”
Rita Demetzer, SLMHC Foundation Treasurer, commented, “We are certainly very pleased and grateful for the support we get locally and through the entire province for the foundation and for raising money for equipment for the hospital. After several months, it’s nice to have a local winner again. I know Cindy so it’s very nice to know who the winner is and have that connection. That she and her family support the hospital as much as they do… it’s just wonderful. Keep supporting!”
