LSPS respond to weapons call involving replica handgun, another call involving assault with a sword

A busy weekend for the Lac Seul Police Service (LSPS).
Police reported that from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 they responded to 37 calls for service including a weapons call involving a replica handgun and an assault with a sword.
“On Sunday November 01, 2020 at 12:31 pm, the Lac Seul Police Service received a call about a female being held at gunpoint in Frenchman’s Head. An LSPS Officer attended the scene and a physical struggle ensued with the Suspect. The LSPS Officer was able to disarm and arrest the male Suspect. The LSPS Officer received minor injuries and was treated at the Meno Ya Win Hospital in Sioux Lookout and released. The female victim was not injured during this incident,” LSPS reported.
As a result of their investigation, LSPS seized a replica handgun that was used in this incident.
LSPS arrested and charged a 32-year-old Frenchman’s Head resident with:
- Kidnapping while using a firearm 279(1.1)(a.1) CC
- Uttering Threats 264.1(1)(a) CC
- Use imitation Firearm while committing an offence 85(2)(a) CC
- Weapons Dangerous 88 CC
- Assault with a Weapon 267(a) CC
The charges have not been tested in court.
“On Sunday November 01, 2020 at 11:14 pm, the Lac Seul Police Service received a call about a sword attack in Frenchman’s Head. Police attended and located 2 victims who were slashed. Both victims were transported to the Meno Ya Win Hospital in Sioux Lookout by EMS and treated for their injuries.
“On November 02, 2020 the LSPS executed a search warrant on a residence and arrested the Suspect,” LSPS informed.
LSPS arrested and charged a 37-year-old Frenchman’s Head resident with:
- Aggravated Assault 268 CC
- Aggravated Assault 268 CC
The charges have not been tested in court.

A traffic stop by LSPS on Nov. 4 has resulted in seven charges.
“On Wednesday November 04, 2020 at 8:12 pm, the Lac Seul Police Service (LSPS) were conducting traffic enforcement in Frenchman’s Head. LSPS stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Frenchman’s Head Rd. The investigation revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested.
LSPS have charged a 31-year-old Lac Seul First Nation resident with:
- Operation while Impaired- Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)- 320.14(1)(b) CC
- Care/Control of Vehicle with Cannabis in Open Packaging- 12(1) CCA
- Speeding- 128 HTA
- Drive while passenger under 16 fails to properly wear a seatbelt- 106(4)(a)(ii) HTA
- Drive while passenger under 16 fails to properly wear a seatbelt- 106(4)(a)(ii) HTA
- Fail to notify change of address- OReg 340/94 33(1) HTA
- Fail to surrender licence- 33(1) HTA
The accused is scheduled to appear in Lac Seul Court on Dec. 16 to answer the charges, none of which have been tested in court.
“The LSPS take a zero-tolerance approach to drinking & driving in the community. By calling 911 and reporting suspected impaired drivers to Police, all Canadians can assist in keeping our roads, trails & waterways safe by reducing impaired collisions, deaths and injuries,” LSPS informed.
