Memories & Celebrations: Obituary
ADAM ZARECKI
August 1, 1924 - August 31, 2023
With sadness, yet grateful for a full life, well lived, we announce the passing of Adam Zarecki, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on the evening of August 31, 2023 at the age of 99 at the William George Extended Care Unit.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Barbara, son in law Ed, brothers Mike and Bill and sisters, Josephine and Ann he is survived by his children, Carol (Jack), Lyn (Dave), Michael (Sharon), grandchildren Frances, Holly (Ruth), Lea (Chris), Melissa, Adam (Anndrea), Colin and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Helen Haverluck.
Dad was born August 1, 1924 in Fort William Ontario to Anton and Julia Zarecki. He was the fourth of six children. He was a young child when the family to moved Ghost River, Ontario, a settlement on the CNR mainline east of Sioux Lookout. It was here that Dad developed his love for the land. He learned to fish, hunt and trap. These hobbies became integral to his life. Amazingly he continued to fish and trap well into his 90’s.
Dad met mom at Mike Ament’s Camp on Little Vermilion Lake where she worked as a cabin girl and he as a fishing and hunting guide. They married and raised their three children in Sioux Lookout.
Dad had a number of jobs in his life including the rail road, the Radar Base and the MNR. When his work at the MNR came into conflict with his trapping he quit and spent more than 40 years of retirement, doing what he loved - fishing, hunting and trapping.
Dad was a humble, unassuming man. He wasn’t much for socializing or travelling. He left that to mom. He enjoyed working in his garage, preparing fur in the basement and being out on the lake or in the bush. His favorite place was his trappers shack on Marchington Lake. He lived a simple life, enjoying family gatherings and hearing about the adventures of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Dad was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
The family is forever grateful for the wonderful care and compassion of the staff at the Extended Care Unit. Our sincere appreciation to Dr Morgan for the many years he cared for Dad, the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home and Legion for helping us with the arrangements, and to our extended family and friends who supported us through this difficult time.
There will be a graveside service and burial for Adam and Barbara on Wednesday September 20th at 11 a.m. at Northway Cemetery.
Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of life to be held in the lower clubrooms of the Legion on Wednesday Sept 20th at noon.
In memory of Adam please consider a donation to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 78 via the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home, PO Box 1449, 128 Front St. Sioux Lookout, ON P8T 1B9.
