With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of John “Johnny” George Maxwell, a beloved member of the Lac Seul First Nation, who left us on August 18th, 2024, at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. Johnny passed away following a heart attack on August 10th, leaving an irreplaceable void in the lives of all who knew him.
Born on April 20th, 1953, in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, to John (Jack) and Elsie Maxwell, Johnny lived a life full of love, laughter, and meaningful connections. He was a dedicated family man who found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether he was playing a spirited game of cribbage, fishing on calm waters, or picking wild blueberries, Johnny’s zest for life was contagious. He was also an avid hockey fan, proudly cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs with unwavering loyalty, never missing a game and always wearing his love for his team on his sleeve.
Johnny’s work life was as industrious as his spirit. Over the years, he took on various roles in transportation, most notably as a truck driver for Babeyah Shipping & Receiving from 1984 to 1994 and as a driver for Gord’s Taxi from 1994 to 2015. He also worked with CN Rail, Jim’s Taxi and Kingsway contributing not only to his profession but also to the betterment of his community through his dedication and hard work.
Above all, Johnny’s greatest pride and joy came from his family. He was a loving father to his children, John (Sonny), Jacqueline (Jackie), Jamie (James), and stepson Tim. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating countless memories that will be treasured forever. Johnny is survived by his life partner, Velma, who stood by his side with love and devotion; his siblings, Linda Chabbert (Sioux Lookout), Helen Maxwell (Winnipeg), and Gordon Maxwell (Sioux Lookout); his niece Jennifer; his nephews Richard, Kevin, Steven, and Trevor; and his grandchildren Isiah, Markus, Roy, Amaiha, Carley, Creeann, Tristen, Cole, Jermayn, Jonathan, and Brady. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Romeo, Noah, Emmet, Siara-Lynn, Jerami, Draven, and Kehlani.
Johnny was predeceased by his parents, John (Jack) and Elsie; his brothers, Roger and Dennis; his nephew, David; and his granddaughter, Dannis. Though they have gone before him, the love they shared remains eternal.
Johnny will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. His kind heart, warm smile, and unwavering love for his family and friends will forever be remembered and cherished.
Cremation has taken place, and a small burial service was held on September 9th, 2024, at Hillcrest Cemetery (Lot D-065).
Rest easy, Johnny. Your memory will live on in the hearts of those who love you.
