Residents are being asked to save the date – Sept. 10, for this year’s Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (MHSW) Collection event, which will run from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Public Works Garage at 41 Fifth Avenue.
Representatives from Miller Environmental will be on hand to accept hazardous or special waste from community members at the event.
A full list of residential household hazardous waste items which can be dropped off for free at the event can be viewed in this week’s Municipal Messages or on the Municipality’s website at https://www.siouxlookout.ca/en/news/2022-mhsw-collection-event.aspx.
Municipal Public Works & Infrastructure Manager, Jeff Hawley, shared, “These materials are prohibited from entering our landfill. That said, we appreciate residents accumulate these materials over the course of a year. We want to ensure residents have a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of these materials, hence the creation of this day.”
Approximately eight tons of material was collected in 2020.
Hawley stated, “We encourage residents to take the time to go through their properties and gather Household Hazardous Materials from their homes, sheds and garages, and bring them in. We look forward to seeing them!”
Asked if the Municipality might consider offering the event more than once a year, Hawley responded, “Generally speaking, the day is well-attended but we do not see evidence of having to turn anyone away. Therefore, once a year seems an appropriate frequency at this time.”
