Municipality expresses thanks to individual(s) who cleaned up large number of discarded facemasks

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is applauding the efforts of the anonymous individual(s) who picked up discarded facemasks in Sioux Lookout.
The Municipality posted its thanks on their social media platforms last week, along with two photos of a bag full of discarded masks. Inside the bag was placed a note stating the bag contained over 1000 discarded facemasks collected over a five day period.
The bag was discovered by a Municipal employee early on the morning of March 22 at the Municipal Office.
Originally thought to have been collected from Centennial Park, the Municipality shared later in the week it had learned the facemasks were collected from a variety of locations throughout
the community.
“Our sincere appreciation to the person(s) who collected all the masks and a reminder to all members of the public that it is illegal to litter. Everyone’s support and contributions to keeping our community clean and welcoming is a shared, civic responsibility,” shared Brian P. MacKinnon, Municipal Manager of Corporate Services / Municipal Clerk.
“Working to keep our community clean and litter-free is an ongoing, and often uphill, task. The Municipality and our staff always appreciate the contributions of community volunteers who assist in keeping our community clean and inviting,” MacKinnon said, adding that the Municipality is supporting the Chamber of Commerce in their annual community clean-up.
Asked about Municipal employee’s ongoing efforts to keep the community clean, MacKinnon explained, “The Municipality continues to undertake routine clean-up of Municipal properties, including the Centennial Park, Umfreville Trail, Ball Diamonds (Sioux Lookout and Hudson), playgrounds and parks, Municipal parking lots and all other Municipal properties. As you can appreciate, with the recent melting of snow, there is over five months of litter/garbage strewn around the community – it takes time to collect all of this garbage, and these efforts are stymied by the continued littering that occurs.”
