The Municipality of Sioux Lookout will receive up to $458,000 in provincial disaster recovery funding to help cover the costs of the emergency response, debris clean up, and repairs to municipal infrastructure related to flooding across northwestern Ontario last spring.
Sioux Lookout is one of nine municipalities in Northwestern Ontario receiving flood recovery support through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program.
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout confirmed, “The Municipality will be using the funds to help offset the direct costs due to the flooding in addition to capital costs to restore road infrastructure.”
The Municipality further informed, “In order for the Municipality to be eligible for the funding, the Municipality would need to have reached a threshold of three per cent of its own taxation levy. The Municipality currently has $267,634 in actual flooding expenses in 2022 and estimated capital work needed to repair infrastructure of $277,866 for a total of $545,500. This meets the threshold required to receive funding.”
“The Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program is an important source of funding for municipalities who have suffered extensive damage due to unexpected natural disasters,” stated Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “By accessing this funding, these municipalities will be able to make essential repairs to municipal infrastructure that was damaged by the disaster.”
The Sioux Lookout Bombers' inaugural season has come to a close.
The Bombers fell to the Wisconsin Lumberjacks in a heartbreaking 3-2 Game 7 overtime loss at the Hangar on April 5.
