The National Hockey League (NHL) recently featured a photo of Sioux Lookout’s Skating Trail on their Facebook and Instagram pages. While two local residents were out skating, Ethan Baas captured the mesmerizing moment on January 11, and Jordan Mekanak-Fontaine, saw the beauty of it and submitted the photo to the NHL.
Baas shared that it makes him very happy to have his photo featured by the NHL. Fontaine extended a huge thanks to Baas for taking the picture, and of course the people who made the trail. Fontaine commented, “I shared the photo because I thought it was unique, one long skating trail with barely people on it is something that doesn’t happen too often.”
Dr. Ruben Hummelen, who has been preparing the trail for three years now, shared, “Feeling honored that the NHL recognizes this trail created by the community. But also not surprised. It is the only trail of this length in North Ontario. The trail is at such a unique location, with a beautiful view of Sioux Mountain… The ice is still nice and smooth and the skating is tremendous.”
