NWHU keeping communities updated as positive COVID-19 cases come to light

The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting a positive COVID-19 test result from the Rainy River Assessment Centre.
On March 27, the NWHU shared, “The case had travelled to the U.S.A. and upon returning from travel has been in voluntary self-isolation since that time. The health unit is doing follow up regarding the case, as per protocols, including the identification and quarantine of any contacts.”
“This case shows why self-isolation of returning travellers is so imperative. This person did everything right, and in turn, has protected our communities,” said Dr. Ian Gemmill, Acting Medical Officer of Health for Northwestern Health Unit. “Because this person was responsible and self-isolated, we expect that there will be very few exposed contacts, if any.”
On March 26 NWHU shared it had received notification of a positive case of COVIV-19 attributed to the region, clarifying that although the case was reported in the NWHU region, the person does not reside in our area.
‘The infected person’s primary residence is in southern Ontario. The lab system in Ontario sends results to the health unit jurisdiction according to the address given by the person being tested,” NWHU shared.
“In this case, although the address given is in our jurisdiction, we have confirmed that the case was in another country when infected, and has not been in our area while infectious, and is not now in our area,” Gemmill stated.
