OPP Open House, Community Safety Day a chance to meet officers, learn more about policing in Sioux Lookout, and take in safety messages

More than 200 people visited the Sioux Lookout OPP detachment at 62 Queen Street in Sioux Lookout during this year’s Blueberry Festival as part of an OPP Open House and Community Safety Day on August 4.
Sioux Lookout OPP Community Mobilization/Safety Officer Constable Andrea DeGagne shared, “The OPP had representatives in attendance from the Auxiliary Program, Emergency Response Team, Forensic Identification Unit, Indigenous Policing Bureau, and Uniform Recruitment, all of whom were eager to answer questions and provide information to the public about their role in policing. Our local marine and bike enforcement units set up displays, and Officers and Special Constables ran eight detachment tours throughout the day. We also had five retired officers who still reside in the area stop in and say hello.”
DeGagne further stated, “Safety day could not have been possible without the assistance of our community safety partners. I would like to extend a special thank you to the volunteers from Sioux Lookout Fire and Rescue and the EMTs who brought out the pumper truck, and ladder truck, and ambulance out for the public to view. We had a presentation on the proposed Street Patrol team from Darlene Angeconeb, who was able to collected some volunteers and is on her way towards getting the patrol up and running this fall. Candi Edwards from the Ontario Native Women’s Association presented on fall safety, child seat safety, and provided some wonderful door prizes, made possible through a grant from Parachute Canada. Finally, a huge thanks to The Sacred Heart Grade 7/8 students and parents who put together a delicious barbeque and provided the upbeat tunes that kept us going through such a scorcher of a day.”
