Sioux Lookout OPP remind public to Lock It OR Lose It
With warmer temperatures and nice weather approaching, foot traffic is increasing, and with it crimes of opportunity. Members from the Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are requesting assistance from the public in preventing these crimes by securing their vehicles and keeping valuables out of sight.
On Sunday, May 5th, 2019, Sioux Lookout OPP officers received reports of numerous vehicles being rummaged through in the area around Third Avenue and Fair Street. The OPP is requesting anyone with information about these incidents contact the Sioux Lookout Detachment at 807-737-2020 or 1-888-310-1122.
If you have been a victim and haven't reported it, the Sioux Lookout OPP would like to know. The Sioux Lookout OPP will be increasing foot patrols as part of the "Lock it OR Lose It" program. Focused patrols will be conducted in areas targeted by criminals, but without the proper information, high-crime areas may not get the attention required.
Under the "Lock It OR Lose It" program, parked vehicles are examined to confirm they are locked and that no valuables have been left in plain view. A "Lock It OR Lose It" notice is placed on every vehicle checked which specifies what safety precautions were ignored and simple prevention tips are provided which drivers can use to protect their vehicles and valuables from theft.
The OPP once again remind the public that crimes such as theft can be prevented by using some simple tips:
Always roll up your vehicle's windows, lock the doors and pocket the key.
If you have a garage, use it and lock the door as well as your vehicle.
Keep your vehicle registration certificate/proof of insurance on you at all times.
Always park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
Never leave valuable objects or packages in full view. Put them in the trunk.
Never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.
