Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents,
It has been another exciting week speaking with many residents about the local and national issues of importance to them. I was in Quebec City to attend the Conservative Party of Canada’s national convention. My Conservative colleagues and I also had a caucus meeting to discuss national issues, policies, and our priorities for this fall when the House of Commons resumes sitting on September 18.
One issue that I have been hearing from residents is how unaffordable homes have become. After eight years of this Liberal government, housing costs have doubled, nine in ten youth say they’ll never afford a home, and many families can’t even pay the interest on their mortgages. Seniors also do not have access to housing that meets their needs.
The standard home in Canada now costs nearly double that of one in the US—even though they house ten times as many people on less land than Canada. Liberal deficits drive up mortgage rates and government bureaucrats block home building. That’s why Canada has the fewest homes per capita in the G7 even with the most land to build on.
Conservatives will bring homes families can afford by:
• Removing red tape to free up land and speed up building permits.
• Incentivizing municipalities to approve housing by tying federal infrastructure dollars they receive to their ability to quickly greenlight new builds.
• Selling under-utilized federal buildings for new homes.
• Ending inflationary spending to lower interest rates.
Conservatives will bring home a country that works for the people who’ve done the work—where everyone who works hard brings home a good living and a great life.
Fall Priorities Survey
I have recently sent out a mailer that includes a survey on what you think I should focus on this fall. If you have not received your copy yet, it will be coming in the mail soon. Please consider filling it out and sending it back postage-free as it will help guide what I do to represent you in Ottawa.
