Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
Recently, I had the pleasure to welcome North Caribou Lake First Nation Councillor Tyson Matawapit to Ottawa. We discussed how the federal government can help address the housing needs in his community.
I met with Community Futures Ontario to discuss the need to support businesses in northern Ontario and how the federal government, through FedNor, can better support their work. I also met with the National Police Federation. We talked about community safety, police recruitment, and what the federal government can do to ensure officers have the tools they need to do their jobs safely.
Studying the Transfer of Dangerous Offenders
This week, our Conservative team passed a motion in the Public Safety Committee to study the transfer of serial rapist and murderer Paul Bernardo from maximum security to medium security. Bernardo’s crimes were so heinous he has been given an indeterminate sentence and has been designated a dangerous offender. Criminals like him should remain in maximum security until the end of their lives.
We learned that the offices of the Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety knew months in advance the transfer was planned but chose to do nothing. For months, we have wanted to get answers for the victims’ families and Canadians as to why they did not stop the transfer, but the Liberals had stonewalled and prevented any investigation into this matter.
We never stopped fighting and this week we finally got what Canadians have been demanding. The Public Safety Committee will investigate the Paul Bernardo Transfer Scandal. We’re going to get to the bottom of this and make sure this does not happen again.

When I went to the hardware store last week I had no intention of buying another barbeque. Honestly, I went there only to get a couple mouse traps...
