Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
I want to thank everyone who has sent in their responses to my survey on what I should focus on when Parliament returns. If you have not already, please consider filling it out and sending it back postage-free as it will help guide what I do to represent you in Ottawa.
From the responses I have received, some of the top issues are the rising cost of living, carbon tax, community safety, and highway conditions. These are all issues that I will be focusing on this winter. Our Conservative team will hold the NDP-Liberal government accountable to Canadians for raising the cost of living by increasing the carbon tax and we will use all available tools to stop their plan to quadruple this tax.
Unfortunately, community safety continues to be a top concern for many residents in northwestern Ontario. There have been assaults, vehicle break-ins, and needles being found around our communities—all happening in greater frequency. There are also a growing number of people who are homeless and struggling with their mental health and addictions. I will continue to advocate for greater federal support for detox and addictions treatment programs in northwestern Ontario to get those struggling off the streets and into recovery. There also must be greater consequences for the drug dealers preying on those vulnerable individuals and for repeat violent offenders.
I have also heard from residents that Highway 17 conditions and road safety are a major concern. We have lost far too many lives along the Trans-Canada Highway in our region—which is why we have been calling for its twinning for years. The Ontario provincial government is supporting the highway twinning, but support from the NDP-Liberal federal government is missing. I will continue to call on the federal government to stop stalling and commit to this key project to ensure people can travel safely in our region.
