Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
After 8 years of this NDP-Liberal government, First Nations are being shortchanged. According to the Parliamentary Budget Officer, the government did not achieve better results despite significant increases in spending for Indigenous services. In our region alone, 10 long-term drinking water advisories remain in effect with 18 more across the country.
According to the government’s response to a question I asked, 203 executive level staff and 38 non-executive level staff at Indigenous Services Canada received bonuses in the 2022-23 fiscal year. This represents a cost of $3.647 million to the department.
It is shameful the government is rewarding itself for failing to meet its targets.
The 42 chiefs of First Nations in the Kenora district could have found a much better use for that money. Our Conservative team will continue to advocate for improving Indigenous services and call on the government to end all drinking water advisories as soon as possible.
