Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
It was great to visit the Kenora Chiefs Advisory’s Youth and Family Wellness Camp. The camp offers activities to keep youth engaged and promote their mental health. Thank you to the staff for a tour of the grounds.
I was in Pikangikum First Nation for a meeting of the Independent First Nations Alliance Chiefs, which includes Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Muskrat Dam, Pikangikum, Lac Seul, and Whitesand First Nations. We discussed their local priorities and how a Conservative government will work in partnership with them to advance reconciliation.
We also celebrated provincial leadership in supporting the all-season road and Berens River Bridge project. This project will connect seven remote First Nations to the provincial road system year-round. The project also paves the way for the start of mining developments and will create jobs that provide workers with powerful paycheques.
I ended the week in Dryden to attend the Fall Fair. It was great to chat with residents and see many more come out to support local agriculture in the community.
The NDP-Liberal Government Fails To Build The Homes Canadians Need
After nine years of this NDP-Liberal government, Canadians are living in a housing crisis. They have failed to build enough homes for Canadians to live in, resulting in the cost of downpayments, mortgages and rent all doubling in the time that they have been in government.
Recently, Statistics Canada confirmed once again that their housing plan has failed. This new report showed that the number of dwelling units created had fallen from 27,625 in May to 24,933 in June. This represents a drop of 9.7 percent.
On top of this, when comparing June 2023 to June 2024, the number of dwelling units created has collapsed by 22.4 percent. The housing crisis is even more severe in Canada’s most expensive provinces. In Ontario, when comparing the last 12 months with the previous 12 months before that, the number of dwelling units created is down 7 percent.
Under this NDP-Liberal government, Canada is failing to build enough homes to match Canada’s growing population. There are currently fewer homes being built than there were in the 1970s when Canada’s population was half the size. The government has tried to fix this problem by throwing billions of dollars at the gatekeepers who caused the housing crisis in the first place in exchange for pointless photo-ops.
The NDP-Liberal government is not worth the cost. Only Common Sense Conservatives will build homes Canadians can afford by reducing red tape and tying federal infrastructure funding to housing starts.
