Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents,
The NDP-Liberal government is spiraling out of control in front of our eyes and at the very worst time. The government has finally revealed its true deficit number. The outgoing and now former finance minister said she was putting in place ‘guardrails’ to limit the damage that her deficits could do. Her deficit plan was $40 billion, a mind-bogglingly large number that was already contributing to rising inflation.
Mere hours before she was to release a Fall Economic Statement, a mini-budget that outlines the state of the federal government’s financial situation, which was expected to crash through her $40 billion economic guardrail and off the fiscal cliff, the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister announced she had lost confidence in the Prime Minister.
Justin Trudeau pushed Chrystia Freeland to bring on massive, unsustainable, irresponsible spending increases that blew through her self-imposed guardrail. Instead, the government ran a $62 billion deficit.
Outside of this government, there is no government in the history of Canada that has ever run a $62 billion deficit. Not even during the massive global economic crisis did the deficit come anywhere close to that. And yet today we have one, with the global economy growing and the American economy booming in stable times.
This deficit is 100% at the feet of this irresponsible Prime Minister. After nine long years of Justin Trudeau everything is spiraling out of control:
Out of control spending and bureaucracy have doubled housing costs with 1,400 homeless encampments in Ontario alone.
Out of control crime has taken over our streets with gun crime having doubled.
Out of control drugs with over 47,000 people having died of overdoses.
Out of control inflation has followed out of control money printing, which has sent out of control demand to our food banks that are running out of food altogether.
Out of control spending has doubled our national debt, boosted interest rates, and threatened our social programs.
It isn’t just Freeland who thinks Trudeau is out of control, Housing Minister Sean Fraser has also resigned in the middle of a housing crisis. His finance minister is resigning in the middle of an economic crisis and is the fifth of his Liberal caucus to have lost confidence in him, and yet he clings to power.
We cannot accept this kind of chaos, division, and weakness while we are staring down the barrel of a 25% tariff from our biggest trading partner and closest ally.
Several cabinet ministers have walked out on Justin Trudeau. It is now up to Jagmeet Singh, the only person keeping Trudeau in office, to make that realization. How can he possibly still have confidence in Justin Trudeau when no one else does?
The promise of Canada was that if you worked hard, you got a good life. Trudeau broke that promise. It is time for a carbon tax election to take the decision away from Trudeau or Singh and put it in the hands of the people.
Canadians will make the right decision, between a party that will axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget, and stop the crime and the parties that have broken everything.
We have a great future ahead, but we have to start now. Let’s bring it home.
