Sacred Heart School - Class of 2020
SHS Valedictory Address
Jaxson Carnochan
Welcome classmates, school staff and families. I would like to take this opportunity to first thank the staff at Sacred Heart School for all the years that they have taught and guided us in our learning. Along with the staff, to our families, for the time, patience and knowledge that they have passed onto us to become the students and people that we are today.
Like many of you I have spent my entire academic career here at Sacred Heart and I have learned many valuable lessons with and by my teachers and classmates. Some of those lessons dealt with knowledge and study skills. Some of it taught me about team work and sportsmanship. Playing on the basketball team or at track and field are good examples. So is playing football at recess. When it got “carried away” and the teachers tried to intervene, we learned how to compromise - well at least until the teachers were out of view again! And some of it taught me about friendship, respect and kindness. I enjoyed a lot of the things that we did as a class which has turned into great friendships. My mom recently reminded me of my first joke from kindergarten. I came home and asked her what starts with an F and ends in an UCK. She was not impressed with me but when I finally said “Firetruck!” she calmed down.
I also learned a lot from some of the teachers and how they act outside of school. Now you might not remember it but I certainly do, it taught me many things including dancing, swimming or diving lessons and golf cart driving…or not.
We may not have a Toronto trip but we did have our trip to Winnipeg. The best physics lessons involved spinning water and Mr. Johnson, which didn’t end well and got a few of us wet. And at the Winnipeg Zoo when we found out how close you can get to a peacock before it attacks.
This year has been very unusual and unplanned, we began by supporting our teachers so that we can learn without restraints. We all know that more of us in one class could mean a shortage of teachers! Then we were hit by the pandemic and have faced many speedbumps since. All my years, friends and classmates at Sacred Heart have shown me that: “There are no accidents”, a quote by Master Oogway. Which means we are all supposed to be the way we are. So we can sit here and feel sorry for ourselves or we can remember that these are the types of events that build strength and character. We are about to enter the next chapter in our lives – high school. I am both excited and terrified. The future is pretty uncertain but as I look back I am left with great memories of all of you. More importantly as I look forward to high school I hope that we will continue to make more memories.
I thank you all for listening and I say to you all good night and enjoy all what life has to offer.
