The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is one of six communities in Northwestern Ontario sharing in a total of $1,626,150 in Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontarior (FedNor) funding, announced on July 6 in Fort Frances by Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor.
“These projects include community infrastructure development and expansion, critical studies and plans, as well as support for skilled personnel to further community economic development efforts,” a July 6 media release from FedNor states.
The funding is being provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, “which invests in projects led by municipalities, First Nations, and other organizations and institutions that support community economic development, diversification, job creation and self-reliant communities in Northern Ontario.”
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout’s share of the funding, $664,014, will be used to, “extend municipal services, including water and sewer, to the ten-hectare Hillcrest Commercial Site development project, which will allow demand to be met for further commercial development in the municipality.”
Hajdu shared, “A strong plan is the key to growing local economies. These investments today will help create the good-paying jobs that keep Northwestern Ontario growing. And when small businesses succeed, that’s good for everyone. FedNor is an important partner in building success in Northern Ontario communities.”
