Community members gathered at the Edwin Switzer Memorial, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 78 for Remembrance Day services in Sioux Lookout on Nov. 11.
The service included the singing of O Canada and God Save the King, the playing of the Last Post, two minutes of silence followed by Reveille, the laying of wreaths, a reciting of In Flanders Fields, and a special slideshow commemorating the service of Sioux Lookout’s veterans.
Legion President Kirk Drew shared following the service that he thought there was a good turnout, “I would say close to 250 plus people.”
Three wreathes were laid at the cenotaph at the town beach and three wreathes were laid at the veterans cemetery.
Drew also acknowledged the passing of Legion members Adam Zarecki, Harold “Robbie” Robertson, Glen B. Wilson and Comrade Dan Kidd.
Beef on a bun was served following the service by members of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, who also presented the Legion with a cheque for $7500 to support the upkeep and maintenance of the building.
The draw for the Legion Ladies Auxiliary’s Poppy Quilt raffle, which was a sellout with all 1100 tickets being sold, also took place after the service, with Grant Stevens being the winner.
Proceeds from the raffle are supporting the purchase of a new long bed for taller patients at the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre. Legion Ladies Auxiliary President Charron Sippola shared that enough funds have now been raised to purchase that bed.
