Sioux Lookout serving up summer delights!

Spring has sprung and summer isn’t far behind! It’s a time of get-togethers with family and friends and good company means you’ll want good food and drink to share.
To beat the heat and add some flair to your gathering, Nancy Roy of Roy Lane said summer drinks with fresh fruit such as strawberries, mango, or pineapple are delish!
“That’s kind of exciting for us to do. We’ve always done that in the summer,” she said, inviting customers to her store.
Touching up your gathering area with comfortable furniture and accenting with beautiful flowers only enhances the experience she added.
Many spring and summer get-togethers included barbequed treats, but Chef Greg Rice of Moosehorn Lodge said there are some things you should consider when buying meat for the grill.
“Generally you want to pick meats that have marbling so that you have some fat content in there. To me, it’s very important that about an hour before you’re ready to cook, you bring your meat out of the fridge, let it start to warm up to room temperature, season about 15 minutes before you’re ready to cook. Always cook on high, extreme heat” he advised.
“The biggest mistake people make is that they flip their meat too often and make sure you cook your chicken to the right temperature… My biggest tip BBQ wise, more on safety, shut your propane tank off when you’re done. Don’t just shut the knobs off,” he said.
Rice added, “Your vegetables, if you’re going to grill your vegetables, toss them in a little bit of oil first, it will help with colouring and flavour and always season everything.”
For that perfect side dish, or if you prefer a vegan alternative, Chef Lisa-Ann Geddes of Vegan Delights said salads are a perfect spring dish.
An ideal salad for spring and summer would be a quinoa salad she advised, with lots of fresh ingredients.
“It’s really light and almost citrusy because of the orange balsamic vinegar,” she shared.
Virgin Mojitos are another great choice as the weather warms up she said.
“I also have wild blueberry lemonade with our blueberries here. Very refreshing. Those two drinks are perfect for summer or spring.”
Looking to get together with friends or co-workers after a long, hot day? Maybe you’re looking for a great place to take your family. The Sioux Lookout Chamber of Commerce and its member businesses have you covered!
Chamber President Katie Positano said a full list of local restaurants is available on the Chamber’s website, www.siouxlookout.com.
Positano encourages people to shop locally this spring and summer, adding Sioux Lookout’s merchants have the products, services, and expertise people are looking for to make their spring and summer one to remember.
“If they don’t have it, ask them. They’ll bring it in,” she said.
“We have a lot of great businesses. There’s a lot of people, I’m one of them, that have moved to this community and use all of the resources we have in our community and there’s no reason you should look elsewhere, unless you have no other alternative,” she stated.
Shopping locally she said, helps make the community a better place for everyone.
