Sioux North High School - Class of 2020
SNHS Valedictory Address
Kennedy Thompson-Miles
To my fellow Sioux North Graduates of 20/20, first of all, congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard to get here and thank you to our teachers, support workers, family and friends that helped us along the way as graduates of 2020. We all share one thing - resilience. Some terrible things have happened this year and we have lost moments that we will never get back but look at us now, it is the end of June and after four wild years we've finally graduated. We have received our high school diplomas and we are now parting ways, moving on to new and better things.
Each and every one of us has worked hard to get where we are today. We have all overcome different challenges and we are now given the opportunity to celebrate our achievements together virtually. Although I hope you can all remember some of the amazing times we had together, whether it was cheering on our boy’s hockey team as they made it to OFSAA, dressing up and dancing together at prom, having a blast at one of the many Winks activities. Maybe for some of us, memorable times meant walking laps around the old QE building and eating Ted’s soup for lunch.
Whatever the memories, senior year and graduation mean something different for each of us. For some, it means we have to grow up and get a job. Maybe graduation signifies a weight lifted off your shoulders that you've been waiting for and maybe today is a day that you will sit and reminisce with your friends before you realize that you won't be seeing them anymore. My point is we can get through this next milestone in our life. We can transition from being high school students to being adults and persevere. We can use all that we have learned and the connections we have created to decide what kind of futures we want. I could not have made it to this day without my fellow seniors and I'm grateful to have had this opportunity like all of you to receive an education that so many people in this world are not so fortunate to have. We have been able to grow together just as the trees that surround us. We have experienced these influential years of our lives along with unique and colourful individuals.
I know we have all felt ourselves at one point or another that we want to get out of here and leave high school behind. Maybe some of you are thinking that now, however, I realize that we are going to miss this. We are going to miss seeing our friends every day and having barbecues with Mr. Green. We will miss the feeling of finishing an assignment that we worked hard on and getting a good grade and we will miss that we will be back in these halls come fall. All of these things made high school an experience we want to remember.
We may not have known that March 13th would be our last day together as Sioux North 20/20 seniors and that we would not receive quite the celebrations we all deserve. However, we have overcome obstacles such as living away from our home, starting fresh in a small or bigger town or having all of those not-so-terrible assignments finally behind us. We have all gone through something that might hold us back and come out shining. Now, moving on to the real and unfamiliar world of adulthood, it is important as we continue to remember that our dreams and our goals are attainable. We do not need to spend our lives striving for perfection if it means we will miss out on the things that really matter. Good luck to each of my fellow graduates and congratulations on all that you have accomplished.
