The Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club (SLGCC) celebrated Curling Day in Canada on Feb. 24 with an ice preparation clinic in the morning, learn to curl clinic in the afternoon, and a mini fun spiel in the evening.
JoAnne Van Horne, Secretary on the Board of Directors for SLGCC shared, “We started the day off with an ice prep clinic in order to attract new people to learn how to prepare the ice. We had three people come out and Laurie Jefferson instructed that.”
The curling ice is installed and maintained by volunteers.
“It’s important to have a good group of people who know how to do it, and we do already, it’s just nice to add to that,” Van Horne said.
“A learn to curl clinic in the afternoon. Glen Poirier and Natalie Popovic were the instructors for that. I believe we had five people out… it was great and that moved into the short mini bonspiel at night. We ended up having 16 people, which was good, so we made four teams and played two four end games, had a break for supper, had a couple of draws at the end of the evening. It turned out to be a fun evening,” Van Horne shared.
Overall, Vane Horne said the day was a success, “I think the people that attended, it was just an opportunity to get people into the club… I think all in all the day was a success. You always like to see more people, but there were a few other things going on in town as usual. I think it was well worth the effort and people were happy to come out and support the club.”
Commenting on the rest of the curling season, Van Horne shared, “We will be turning the ice plant off on March 29, Easter Weekend, so our league curling is still continuing, so the last game for the mixed league will be March 28… so the men’s, ladies, and mixed league will continue into the last week of March and then that will be a wrap for the season.”
Van Horne noted the club will also be holding its Annual General Meeting on March 17, at 1 p.m. at the clubhouse.
“It’s a chance for all of our voting members to come out and have a say in the club and have a look at how we’re operating,” she said.
Van Horne wished to thank all of the volunteers who have helped out at the golf and curling club, “It’s a lot of work and the ice installation is huge. We have a great group of, I call them the ice team. People don’t realize what goes on behind the scenes sometimes, we do continue to have a good group of volunteers helping us out and it’s a team effort, however we’re always looking for more people to volunteer.”
