SNHS students continue Terry Fox’s legacy

Sioux North High School (SNHS) students continued Terry Fox’s legacy on April 26, raising money for cancer research.
Normally taking place in late September (this year’s Terry Fox School Run is scheduled for Sept. 22), SNHS Teacher Nicole Carbone said of holding the school’s Terry Fox activities last week, “The Terry Fox Foundation supports initiatives any time of year, so with their permission, we looked at trying to balance the activities that celebrate Orange Shirt Day (Sept. 30) as well as Terry Fox. Traditionally the dates are very close, within two weeks of one another, right at the start of school, so the idea of moving Terry to the spring was also founded in him starting his journey April 12 (1980), so it just allows us to honour, to support both.”
Carbone explained, “Students in period one learned a little trivia about the Marathon (of Hope), about him (Fox), his journey, and the request to really pick it up after he was unable to continue. They explored a couple quotes by Terry and one of them was, “It’s got to keep going without me” So, we’re honouring that today.”
During second period students and staff took part in a fundraiser in the school’s gym. For a $1 donation to the Terry Fox Foundation, students were able to throw pasta at several of the school’s teachers, which garnered plenty of participation complete with laughs and smiles.
“It was a nice opportunity for kids to engage and have fun,” Carbone said, adding, “It allows us to collaborate in our fundraising efforts as opposed to the individual trying to recruit.”
During third period, students and staff from the school walked from the school to Front Street and up 5th Avenue back to the school. Many students wore stickers stating who they were walking for. With Earth Day having recently taken place on April 22, staff and students cleaned up litter along the route.
“I think the timing is really good and I hope it becomes an annual thing,” Carbone concluded.
After months of practice and hard work, it's finally showtime for the cast of the Northern Lights Community Theatre (NLCT)...
