SNHS students continue Terry Fox’s legacy, support a fellow student
Sioux North High School (SNHS) students didn’t let snowy weather deter them from participating in a Terry Fox walk on Monday.
Through a fundraising BBQ at the school, funds were raised for the Terry Fox Foundation as well as to support a student at the school battling cancer.
SNHS Teacher Nicole Carbone shared, “The intent is just to participate, raise awareness for cancer research but also to piggyback that April is Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Awareness Month, so specifically looking at the fact that youth are also at risk for developing cancer, that lifestyle, education, food intake, all of those are considerations for balancing body health, mental health.”
Students also learned about Terry Fox and his legacy.
Normally taking place in late September, Carbone said of holding the school’s Terry Fox activities on Monday, “The Terry Fox Foundation supports initiatives any time of year, so with their permission, we looked at trying to balance the activities that celebrate Orange Shirt Day (Sept. 30) as well as Terry Fox. Traditionally the dates are very close, within two weeks of one another, right at the start of school, so the idea of moving Terry to the spring was also founded in him starting his journey April 12 (1980), so it just allows us to honour, to support both.”
Sioux Lookout Municipal Emergency Services Manager/Fire Chief Jeremy Funk says the Municipality is concerned about this year's fire season, which officially got underway on April 1.
