The top four finishers in the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club (SLGCC) championship and the top four finishers in the Eagles Landing Golf Course (Eagle’s) championship went head-to-head in the first ever 72 Cup on Oct. 1 at the SLGCC.
Match 1 pitted Matt Gain (SLGCC) against Jason Jewett (Eagle’s).
Match 2 featured Shane Legros (SLGCC) vs. Al Markowski (Eagle’s).
Match 3 saw Cortez Favot and Ronan Raspado (SLGCC) take on Trevor Szmon and Ray Heitto (Eagle’s).
Each match was worth one point in determining who would take home the 72 Cup.
Markowski from Eagles Landing Golf Course described the event as being similar to the Ryder Cup, in which 12 member teams from the U.S. and Europe tee off against each other in the three-day competition.
Each hole in the 72 Cup counted as a single point towards the player with the least strokes.
Markowski shared that not a lot of tournaments feature this style of play. He further stated, “Great start to build on and get bigger with more players getting involved.”
The morning brought in light winds and chilly weather for the players. Ronan Raspado from SLGCC shared, “It’s getting warmer a little bit, hard to hit the balls in the morning.” When asked about the course, Raspado exclaimed, “The green is a little bit different because they punched it. It has more breaks.” Players shared their appreciation for the work event organizers Austen Hoey (SLGCC) and Rob Alderdice (Eagle’s) put into making the event happen.
The event was sponsored by Beyak Automotive Group, better known as the GM dealerships, located in Sioux Lookout, Dryden and Fort Francis.
Trevor Szmon, a golfer with Eagles Landing, also works at Beyak Automotive group as the director of sales. “It’s an extra bonus I was actually able to play in this, pretty grateful about that,” he said.
Golfers from the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club beat the Golfers from Eagle’s Landing Golf Course two matches to one. The results of the players were as follows: Match 1 - Matt Gain (SLGCC) beat Jason Jewett (Eagle’s). Match 2 - Shane Legros (SLGCC) beat Al Markowski (Eagle’s). Markowski jokingly shared after the match, “Sioux definitely has the home court advantage.” Match 3 - Trevor Szmon and Ray Heitto (Eagle’s) beat Ronan Raspado and Cortez Favot (SLGCC).
