The Sioux Lookout Minor Hockey Association’s Sioux Wolverines and Sioux Storm finished first and second at the Lake of the Woods 2024 U11 hockey tournament, held Feb. 16-18 in Kenora at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre.
Twelve teams competed in the hockey tournament, which ended in an all Sioux Lookout final with the Sioux Wolverines defeating the Sioux Storm.
Four teams from Kenora, two from Fort Frances, two from Emo, two from Sioux Lookout and two from Manitoba took part in the tournament.
The Wolverines were coached by Head Coach Jeremy Caul and Assistant Coach Sean Gaudry.
Caul shared, “It was a very memorable tournament. Both Sioux teams brought the heat and really put us back on the minor hockey map. Sioux Wolverines and Sioux Storm were both undefeated heading into the final, Wolverines taking the cup!”
Caul noted the 23/24 Sioux Wolverines are the first Sioux Lookout team to get their name on the U11 Lake of the Woods Minor Hockey Cup.
He added, “Both teams are lucky to have the full weight of the bench staff behind them, each coach and trainer playing a vital role shaping the season. The kids played their hearts out and it showed.”
The Sioux Storm were coached by Head Coach John Madsen and Assistant Coach Anthony Zarecki.
Madsen shared, “The Sioux Wolverines and Sioux Storm both went undefeated through the round robin. The Storm defeated Stonewall, MB in the semifinals, and the Wolverines defeated Fort Frances. The Sioux vs. Sioux final was an exciting game, as the two teams have had close, competitive games all season. We are very proud of the U11’s this year, they’ve been a very driven and competitive group. A Sioux Lookout team has played in the A-side final game in each of the three U11 tournaments entered this season.”
