Unveiling the Blueberry Festival’s Enchanting Addition: The Blueberry Witch
Angela Anderson - Staff Writer
Making its debut this year as a new element at the Blueberry Festival was an enigmatic figure known as the Blueberry Witch. With a collection of Halloween props amassed over the years, a creative spark ignited within the event’s orchestrator, Dorothy Broderick, owner of Drayton Cash and Carry. The Blueberry Witch was brought to life from the shadows of the prop shed, adding a touch of whimsy and surprise to the festivities.
The inception of this novel event came serendipitously. Amid preparations for the festival, the witch prop caught Broderick’s eye. This whimsical character, usually reserved for Halloween events like “Boo at the Bay” and “Trunk or Treat,” was poised for an unexpected adventure. The idea to incorporate her playfully into the Blueberry Festival was born.
The Blueberry Witch received a makeover, sporting a bespoke Blueberry Festival outfit. Adorned with festival flair, she exuded an air of mystique as she ventured into the heart of the festivities. A few chairs and a small table became her companions, setting the stage for an interactive experience.
The hunt for the Blueberry Witch became a captivating quest that spanned Sioux and Hudson.
Festival-goers were invited to find the Blueberry Witch, take their photo with her and send it to Drayton Cash and Carry’s Facebook page or text it to Broderick to be entered into a prize draw.
Strategically positioned at interesting locales, her presence beckoned festival-goers to embark on a whimsical journey. Repurposed decoration materials were transformed into painted messages, allowing participants to engage with the witch’s trail in an intriguing way.
The Blueberry Witch’s charm extended beyond her physical presence. Her interactive messages wove tales from fairy tales and movies, adding an element of surprise and intrigue. The final challenge presented an opportunity for festival enthusiasts to showcase their problem-solving prowess. Even those unable to physically track her down were welcomed to participate in the challenge, emphasizing inclusivity.
Every day the witch had a new message. People were invited to guess what fairy tale or movie she was drawing from each day?
Answers earned event participants another entry into the prize draw.
The draw was won by Sarah Lacasse.
A special prize of $20 was won by Megan Runds-Commerford and Neil Commerford for being first (and only) people to guess all 10 of her references correctly with their first try.
During the festival, the Blueberry Witch’s path intersected with that of another beloved festival figure—Blueberry Festival mascot Blueberry Bert. Together, they marked the festival’s conclusion with a memorable meeting. This enchanting encounter resulted in a picturesque photo session, capturing the essence of the festival’s camaraderie and creativity.
Broderick said the Blueberry Witch’s presence spurred excitement and participation. Over a hundred people found the witch, reflecting the enthusiasm with which festival-goers embraced the event. The resulting photos ranged from amusing to imaginative, showcasing the community’s diverse spirit.
For Broderick, each photo was a testament to the success of the Blueberry Witch’s venture. While every snapshot held its charm, personal favorites included the snapshot of Blueberry Bert and the unexpected appearance of the MNRF helicopter with MNRF staff member Michael Gervais—an unexpected twist that brought an extra layer of excitement.
The Blueberry Witch’s inaugural appearance infused the festival with a touch of enchantment, a testament to the community’s creativity and adaptability. As the festival chapter closes, thoughts already wander to what next year may hold. Broderick felt the Blueberry Witch’s debut was a resounding success, a testament to the magic that can emerge from a simple idea.
