Yule Rink wins Mixed Bonspiel

Another Mixed Bonspiel is in the books. The event, which hosted 24 curlers across six teams, took place Saturday Feb. 19 at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club (SLGCC).
Commenting on the bonspiel, which ran from 10 a.m. until almost 8 p.m., Austen Hoey, General Manager of the SLGCC and participating curler on Team Yule, shared, “It went very well! Everyone had a good time. All around it was just a great weekend. At the end of it all we had six teams of four curlers each, so it was a pretty solid turnout. Everyone got to play at least four games, so it turned out to be a pretty long day, but a fun day.”
Hoey continued, “We (the Yule Rink) won the tournament. Our middle three games all actually ended by a draw to the button, so that was pretty exciting, we had to go to basically overtime in three of our five games.” The Yule Rink was made up of Skip Logan Yule, Third Austen Hoey, Second Jim Mandley, and Lead Roz Mandley. Second place went to the Van Horne Rink, comprised of Skip JoAnne Van Horne, Third Cathy Bowen, Second Bruce Van Horne, and Lead Brad Bowen. A variety of prizes for the winning teams were donated by Sioux Lookout Home Hardware.
Reflecting on the day’s activities, Hoey concluded, “It’s great to see curling becoming a bit more popular in Sioux Lookout as we hopefully near the end of the pandemic. People are happy to get out again and have some fun here at the curling rink. We have another bonspiel, Glow Curling, on March 12 and we hope to see a bunch of people out for that, and we are really excited for next curling season just with the momentum that we’ve built this year.”
