Local residents had the opportunity to pose questions to five of the six Federal candidates running to becoming Kenora – Kiiwetinoong MP during an All Candidates Forum held in the Lower Legion Hall on April 14. The space was donated by the Legion for the event.
In attendance were Jon Hobbs – Green Party of Canada, Bryce Desjarlais – People’s Party of Canada, Eric Melillo (Incumbent) – Conservative Party of Canada, Tania Cameron – New Democratic Party, and Kelvin Boucher-Chicago – Independent. Not in attendance was Charles Fox – Liberal Party of Canada.
Moderated by Dick MacKenzie, each of the candidates was given three minutes to make an opening address.
An opening addressed provided by Fox was read by MacKenzie.
Candidates were then given two minutes each to respond to questions from community members.
Questions included:
• Candidates thoughts on the rationale behind transporting nuclear waste across Canada by truck to the proposed deep geological repository for nuclear waste to be built at Revell Lake
• Whether to fund or defund CBC Radio Canada
• What candidates would do to advocate for a large number of people living and working in Sioux Lookout on immigration visas that may have to leave because of new laws
• How will Northwestern Ontario be represented in Ottawa with respect to these three things: limited and expensive connectivity, lack of public transportation across the country, and high gas prices
Candidates were each then given three minutes to make closing remarks.
Local resident Anne Saltel, who co-organized the forum with MacKenzie, said she was pleased with the forum. “I was pleased the five committed candidates came. I was impressed with the turnout. The questions were varied. It demonstrates the different concerns constituents have. I always like to hear how candidates can speak to issues off the cuff,” she shared.
A video of the forum has been uploaded to YouTube by local resident Nadine Arpin, which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0EIB4laMrI. As of April 22, the video had been viewed 447 times.
