Honouring Indigenous veterans
The Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre (NGFC) hosted a sunrise ceremony on Nov. 8, Indigenous Veterans Day, followed by a luncheon.
NGFC staff member Tanya Necan explained the special event celebrated the service of Indigenous Veterans and their contributions, while fostering connection and community among all veterans and attendees.
Part of the luncheon was led by Romaine Lyon (pictured), Elder for the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Cenre as well as Sunset Women’s Aboriginal Circle.
Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa shared on Facebook a video of him speaking in the Legislative Assembly. “I spoke to honour the Indigenous veterans in Kiiwetinoong and in other places. We must continue to talk about the history of how Indigenous veterans were treated in Canada,” Mamakwa stated in his post.
Led by the colour guard, members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Sioux Lookout Fire Service, 270 Otter Air Cadets Squadron, and members of the community marched to the cenotaph at the Town Beach on Nov. 11,..
