Sioux Lookout remembers
Led by the colour guard, members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Sioux Lookout Fire Service, 270 Otter Air Cadets Squadron, and members of the community marched to the cenotaph at the Town Beach on Nov. 11, where wreathes were laid on behalf of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and the Edwin Switzer Memorial Royal Canadian Legion Branch 78 by Legion Sergeant at Arms Pat Davis.
Community members then gathered in the Legion Upper Hall for Remembrance Day services.
The service included the singing of O Canada and God Save the King, the playing of the Last Post, two minutes of silence, the laying of wreaths, a reciting of In Flanders Fields, and a special slideshow commemorating the service of Sioux Lookout’s veterans.
Kelli George-Egerter, Poppy Campaign Chair on the Legion Executive, led the service, along with Davis, who escorted guests as they laid wreathes.
“It’s something that I always mark personally, and I think it’s important as a community that we mark. Back around World War II close to 20 percent of our community members actively participated in various roles and I think it’s something that is very deeply seated in our town and very important to honour those folks, current and past, and I love the support from the community. It is always nice to see everyone come out and mark this special day,” George-Egerter shared.
Beef on a bun was served following the service by members of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
