Incident in Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug results in passing of two community members

Two people have been confirmed deceased after an incident on Jan. 1 in Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI), according to the First Nation.
According to a news release issued by Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug on Jan. 2, an investigation is ongoing with more details to be released as they become available.
“The community of KI has suffered significant loss over the past month with an additional seven individuals having passed between December 1st, 2023, and January 1st, 2024. KI honours the memory of Baby Childforever, Matthew Sainnawap, Sophie Cromarty, Debra McKay, Rebbecca Sakakeep, Adam McKay, and Clayton Nesh,” KI shared.
“Our community is grieving with the loss of so many of our members in such a short period of time. While some of these deaths were expected, many were not. Our community as a whole is shaken by this tremendous loss and our ability to provide services over the holidays has been greatly impacted” said Chief Donny Morris “We ask that everyone respect the families’ privacy during this difficult time.”
