Keewatin-Patricia District School Board provides update on PowerSchool Data Breach
Keewatin-Patricia District School Board - Special to The Bulletin
The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board (KPDSB) is providing an important update regarding the December 22–28, 2024, cyber incident involving PowerSchool, a widely used application for storing student information.
On January 7, 2025, PowerSchool notified KPDSB and other school boards in Ontario and across North America of a data breach. KPDSB’s ongoing investigation has revealed that the breach could potentially impact data belonging to KPDSB students, their families, and staff dating back to 2015.
To support those affected, KPDSB has created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document, which includes details about the breach, the types of data that may have been impacted, and steps individuals can take to protect themselves. The FAQ will be updated as new information becomes available.
Staff and families are urged to remain vigilant following the breach. Best practices include:
• Regularly monitoring email and online accounts.
• Updating passwords and using strong, unique passwords.
• Being cautious of unfamiliar emails, calls, or messages.
• Avoiding clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information without verifying the source.
KPDSB continues to work with PowerSchool to gather more details and address the situation. More updates will be shared as the investigation progresses.
