Local ‘superheroes’ in the spotlight at Sioux Lookout Public Library

Children, their families, and community members were invited to the Sioux Lookout Public Library (SLPL) last Friday to meet Sioux Lookout’s very own local “superheroes.”
“Each year we try to take a moment to shine light on our local superheroes. We know how hard they workday in and day out to keep our children and our community safe. We try to celebrate them by linking fictional characters with fictional superpowers to those who serve us daily in our community with real life superpowers,” shared SLPL Assistant Librarian Nancy McCord.
She added, “We understand how difficult it can be to find enough staffing to allow these superheroes the opportunity to come celebrate with us and are extremely grateful to those who were able to make the time to do so. OPP, SkyCare and Sioux Lookout Fire Service has partnered with the Sioux Lookout Public Library for this initiative for the past three years and we are already starting to plan for next year!”
During the event, children were able to try on firefighting equipment, test out a heat detector, collect fire hats and colouring books, makes their own superhero capes, make and fly paper airplanes, test out their blood pressure, try on OPP vests and riot gear, as well as collect 3d printed coins from each station they visited, McCord said.
Approximately 150 people attended the morning event. Several young visitors to the library came dressed up for the party.
McCord concluded, “We appreciate all of the heroes taking time from their busy schedules to teach us about their professions and show us a little bit of what they do to protect us. We all agree that it was a great time and are looking forward to hosting again next year!
